Hi everyone!
So, an introduction is called for. This blog is all about the Innocent Smoothies Big Knit.
Every year, Innocent Smoothies donate some money to Age UK to keep elderly people warm over winter. This year it’s 35p per hat-on-a-bottle. Lots and lots of volunteers use up their scraps of yarn to get the numbers up. Last year, they got an amazing 506,000 hats, and this year they’re aiming for over 600,000. I will try to find a way to put the hatometer somewhere on here. 🙂
The last hat should be knitted on 14th October 2010, and the deadline for 2010 is 20th October. My progress, let me show you it.
How to make a hat
Take some scraps of DK wool and some 3.5mm knitting needles. Cast on 28 stitches. Knit in garter stitch for 4 rows, and stockinette for 12-14 rows. K2tog all the way along for two rows, until you have 7 stitches left. Use a large sewing needle to thread the tail through the stitches, pull tight and sew the sides of the hat together inside out. Turn it the right way in again, and sew a bobble on top.
Voila! Put in an envelope with lots of other hats and send off to Innocent:

Hi, just found your blog via twitter. You are much more ambitious than me, I’m aiming for 1 hat a week! (pathetic I know but work 7 days a week and find it hard to get a chance to watch tv). I am on target with 21 hats (I started at the end of the last Big Knit in 2009) although most are without pompoms!
Well done you. Will follow your blog with interest.
June
Hey June, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! It sounds like you’re doing well – I barely managed 21 last year, I set this up as a kind of new year’s resolution. I saw that you retweeted, so thank you. 🙂 Good luck with your target!
